First off, I must say that I have not made bark yet. I know, I know, but it is coming. OK, now on to my potatoes. The other night I decided to make Au Gratin potatoes because: 1- I had never made them before, and 2- Brian wanted to buy the kind in the box and I said no way! So I searched for a simple, easy recipe to make. Luckily, I found one. The only thing was, I didn't realize how long it had to bake. But it actually turned out really well, surprisingly well.
I used a recipe from allrecipes.com, a great website that lets you change the number of servings then recalculates the recipe for you. It really, really helps, especially if you don't want leftovers. The recipe called to layer the potatoes and onions every other layer, then pour the cheese sauce over the top. I used small, red potatoes which actually cut the cooking time down by 30 min., and only half an onion. The only change I made to the cheese recipe was adding an extra tsp. of flour to thicken it up a little more.
I covered the casserole dish with foil, as was directed, then we took the foil off for the last 5 minutes. After doing so, I recommend taking the foil off half way through to get that crispiness. We got a little crispness on the outside, but not completely to our liking.
But crispness really did not matter after Brian and I each had a bite. We ate the entire dish! I highly recommend this recipe if you like experimenting with your potatoes. Eat well!
